English Grammar in Use: Tenses (check yourself !)

school
Hello , dear learners!

I have revised the Grammar section and decided to give you a chance to control how well you   know the tenses of English verbs which we have learned.
As usual, I use a short extract from
Mary Poppins by P. L. Travers

In this exercise you have to find verbs and name the verb tenses .

“Ha!” said  Mr Banks. “Admiral’s telescope says  East Wind. I thought  as much. There is frost in my bones. I shall wear two overcoats.” And he kissed his wife absentmindedly on one side of her nose and waved to the children and went away to the City.

... Mrs Banks went into the drawing room and sat there all day long writing letters to the papers and begging them to send some Nannies to her at once as she was waiting; and upstairs in the Nursery, Jane and Michael watched at the window . They were glad Katie Nanna had gone, for they had never liked her.

We Have a Little Garden

by Beatrix Potter
We have a little garden,
A garden of our own,
And every day we water there
The seeds that we have sown.
We love our little garden,
And tend it with such care,
You will not find a faded leaf
Or blighted blossom there.

The Fame of English Literature : The Flowers by Robert Louis Stevenson (+ video)

Have you ever been to the Magic Garden?

I'm sure ,you were there when you were as small, as a rose bush. Then everything was different and you could see a tiny fairy and listen to her song.

The magic world is opened to us by Robert Louis Stevenson (1850–1894)  in his poem The Flowers.

This Scottish writer is famous for his adventure novel  Treasure Island, but his poems from A Child's Garden of Verses are also amazing.

Hope, you'll read and enjoy this one

mELTing Activities, Lessons and Ideas: Cut a worksheet for a change of pace!

If you need some fresh ideas for your lesson, read this post. It's really interesting!

mELTing Activities, Lessons and Ideas: Cut a worksheet for a change of pace!:
What is my student doing at the window? Admiring the view? Taking a break? Trying to get warm by leaning against the window heated by the  sun? Actually he's working on a worksheet!

There are a lot of people who feel that worksheets for the most part are no longer needed in class. It is an interesting and environmental idea, but sometimes I just like having my students use worksheets.

However, I do think worksheets can become a crutch. Like PowerPoint, webquests or any classroom tool, if we use it the same way too much, it doesn't provide the variety our students need.

Silent Protest

by Vernon Waring

In church pews I am quiet
In libraries I'm hushed
At grave sites I am silent
In theaters I am shushed

In hospital halls I whisper
The epitome of poise
But frankly what I'd welcome now
Is some pure unadulterated NOISE!

Studying English : Motivation

Today let’s talk about raising motivation to studying English.

As for my country, it is far from English speaking societies, and what is more , it is culturally and economically isolated from English speaking world. So, very often the teachers have the difficulties with engaging students to study  English.

The students refuse to study English because they are sure they won’t use it in future, so they needn't to  study it today. It's just waste of time for them.
I don't know if my colleagues have  such a problem, but I have. That’s why I decided to make my students think   where they can  hear, read and speak   English at present.

The pupils thought a bit and gave me such answers:

An attic, a chimney, and a roof above.
And my house is a home,
'Cause it's filled with love!

ESL Reading : George Bernard Shaw

George Bernard Shaw

George Bernard Shaw is a genius of English literature, and one of the most well-known writers of the world. Irish playwright George Bernard Shaw wrote more than 60 plays during his lifetime and was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1925.

He is famous for his plays ,which are the example of the deep  sense, humour and good taste. No wonder ,that his plays are still popular around the world. As for me , I especially love these ones : "Saint Joan","Heartbreak House","Pygmalion","Caesar and Cleopatra "

But I'm sure we have to memorise his wise words. They show us how well this person knew the human's nature .
